Field trip: New Bedford Whaling Museum

Saturday, March 30, 2018
Expenses of this field trip (admission, a meal) are covered by the Rumowicz Seminar in Literature and the Sea.
Please email me and:
1. let me know if you have a car and are willing to drive other students.
2. let me know if you prefer to meet other students on campus; meet a group near Providence; or meet at the museum.
What our day will look like:
  • 1 PM Those of you that are driving together from campus will meet at 10am at the Dunkin Donuts across from Swan and the Alumni Center for carpooling. Drive time is Approx 1 hour from the URI campus.
  • 2 PM Arrive at Whaling Museum at 11am, plan our stay will include a tour of the museum collections and of the Seamen’s Bethel, the model for the chapel/bethel in Moby Dick (chapters “The Pulpit,” “The Sermon”). Unfortunately, the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Reading Room and Archives will be closed.
  • We will have until 5:00 PM until the museum closes, time permitting we can have an early dinner/afternoon snack at one of the nearby gastropubs.
  • Return to campus/home.
Metered, street parking is free on weekends and there is much of it immediately around the museum. If you prefer:
The Elm Street Garage is located one block north of the National Park Visitor Center (at North Second and William Streets) and two blocks from the Whaling Museum. Vehicle height limit: 6’3″. Directions to Elm Street Parking Garage: From I-195, take Exit 15 (Route 18 South – Downtown). Take RIGHT at the first traffic light onto Elm Street. Garage is approximately 500 feet on your RIGHT.
If you arrive earlier in the day:
You can visit the Nathan and Polly Johnson House, a “station” on the Underground Railroad that sheltered Frederick Douglas.
Or weather and ambition permitting, walk the Black History Trail/New Bedford Underground Railroad Tour.
