ENG 396: Literature & The Sea

Essay 1 — Sea Knowledges

DUE: Monday, February 5, 2018

Re-read Ofelia Zepeda’s “Carrying Our Words” (2015), Paul Tough’s “A Speck in the Sea” (2014), OR Washington Irving’s “The Voyage” (1819-20).

Write a short essay of 3-4 pages or 900-1200 words that puts Helen Rozwadoski’s “Scientific Writing and Knowing the Ocean” in conversation with either the work of Zepada, Tough, or Irving. Please post your essays to Sakai and Edublogs

For instance, you might ask:

  • What questions does Rozwadoski allow you to ask of the text you have chosen?
  • How does this text exceed the paradigms of oceanic writing that Rozwadoski describes?
  • Do you have new questions for Rozwadoski that arise from your reading of the literary text?
  • What kind of sea knowledge is the text you have chosen documenting, describing, or inventing?
  • Or, you might choose to answer one of the discussion questions you asked earlier this week with reference to Rozwadoski AND the text you have chosen.

Details.

  1. Include a title.
  2. Images welcome but not required.
  3. Be as concrete and specific as you can be – quote and analyze the texts under examination.
  4. Use parenthetical citation (MLA style is default). if you quote other sources, include a worked cited section.
  5. Please include page numbers in the document you post to Sakai.
